One of the biggest island among the five Prince`s islands near Istanbul is Buyukada island. In Turkish language Buyukada means Big Island (Buyuk - big, Ada - island).
From Istanbul you can get to Buyukada, using a ship, from few areas, like: Kabatas(1) (1.5 hour in transit), Kadikoy(2) (1 hour 10 minutes in transit ), Bostanci(3) (30 minutes in transit).
One of the most famous places on Buyukada Island is The Church of st. George. The church is located on the top of the mountain surrounded by pine trees. That Church of st. George or Aya Yorgi (in Turkish language) is known with a legend, that if you will come inside and will wish something, that dream will come true.
Climbing to the mountain you can on foot, using a bicycle, which is easy to rent everywhere on island, or on horse.
But, before you will decide to take a bicycle, think twice, because, last 300-400 meters of the road you will need to climb up on foot, with a bicycle on hands.
If you will want to swim and to sunbath, in Buyukada you will not find free beaches. There are just privite beaches, which are a bit expensive.
Strongly advice you to taste fish in the restaurants near the sea, where you can sit on the open platform and feed fishes and seagulls.
Also, you can rent a bicycle and discover the island. Every building on the Buyukada island is unique. And most of them are really old and interesting.
You can walk along the sea side, watching Istanbul on the other bang.
Don`t be surprised of a lot of cats in Buyukada. Yes, cats and seagulls is the main population on the island. )
